Ultraskew – general information

The key advantage of the Ultraskew propeller lies in its extremely smooth running at high thrusts. Vibration and sound not only penetrate the boat through the shaft assembly, but are also transmitted through the hull by water turbulence caused by the propeller. In order to inhibit this water turbulence at the propeller, the latest propeller development has produced a high-skew propeller design. Skew describes the twisting of a screw blade along its vertical axis. With its distinctive shape, the centrally oriented radial sections of each propeller blade enter the water evenly one after another. Screw blade skew compensates for irregular water currents and flow separation.

This dramatically reduces cavitation, which in turn reduces unpleasant vibrations on the propeller and shaft assembly and increases propeller efficiency (thrust).

Plenty of fuel in the tank...

These advantages mean that the Ultraskew propeller operates more economically, because it delivers higher thrust at lower speeds. This reduces the rpm range at cruising speed (65% of nominal speed for planing craft).

Or in other words: you achieve faster speeds while staying within your usual rpm range. This only applies at up to 85% of the nominal speed, i.e. it will not normally increase your top speed at full throttle!

Mixer propeller for dough mixers

On customer request, special mixer propellers were developed and manufactured at the end of 2003/beginning of 2004. These propellers were designed using 3D-CAD programs. The data was then processed using CAM software and transferred to a CNC machining centre. This then milled the free-form curved surface.

Among other things, we manufacture all kinds of customised propeller according to the requirement of clients, such as the German Sea Rescue Service, Lürssen-Bardenfleth, Fassmer, the Rean shipyard, Thies Propellers and Schaffran Propellers, to name but a few of the renowned companies we count among our customers.

Nozzle propeller: Free-fall lifeboats

As well as the previously described propeller types, SPW also manufactures propellers for free-fall lifeboats in the commerical shipping sector. There are three major manufacturers of this type of special free-fall lifeboat on the global market. The fact that two of these shipyards are supplied by SPW means that, with these special propellers, SPW has cornered a 60-70% share of the world market.

They are manufactured from different materials, due to the fact that some of these free-fall lifeboats are launched from 36 – 40m above the water surface, which places particular demands on the propeller material. These propellers are all subject to series acceptance testing by the classification society "Germanischer Lloyd".
